Dumpster Restricted Items, Disposal Fees and Cleanup Charges
Some household, automotive, construction and shop materials cannot be placed in a Dump It KC dumpster. This page explains which materials are prohibited, which materials require an additional disposal fee, and what charges apply when liquids, chemicals or other contaminants leak or spill.
Do Not Place Prohibited Items in the Dumpster
Prohibited liquids, chemicals, batteries, fuel containers and hazardous materials can create fires, chemical reactions, environmental contamination and serious safety hazards during transportation and unloading.
All containers are considered restricted even when the customer believes they are empty. Containers may still contain liquid, vapor, residue or pressure.
Customers should contact Dump It KC before loading any item that is not clearly listed as accepted.

How Restricted Item Charges Work
Each prohibited or restricted item is charged according to the prices listed on this page. Charges are assessed per individual item, container, battery, tire, appliance or disposal incident.
Item fees do not include spill cleanup, dumpster decontamination, exterior damage, transfer station contamination, reloading, returning items or equipment downtime. Those charges are listed separately and may apply in addition to the individual item fee.
Example: A one-gallon paint can placed in the dumpster is charged the applicable paint-can fee. If the can leaks inside the dumpster, the interior spill cleanup fee also applies. If paint reaches the exterior of the dumpster or the transfer station floor, the applicable contamination fee is added.

Restricted Item Questions
Can I place an empty paint can in the dumpster?
Do not place a paint can in the dumpster without approval. Paint may remain under a dried surface or inside the rim, seams and bottom of the container.
What happens if paint or oil spills inside the dumpster?
The applicable item fee and interior cleanup fee will both apply. More severe contamination may also require decontamination, equipment downtime or repair.
What happens if a liquid spills at the transfer station?
A transfer station floor spill fee of $1,200 to $2,500 applies when a customer-loaded liquid or contaminant spills onto the facility tipping floor or unloading area. Paint spills generally start at $1,200, while oil spills may reach $2,500 because oil is more difficult to clean.
Why are batteries prohibited?
Batteries may ignite, explode or leak corrosive material when crushed, punctured or exposed to metal and other debris.
Can I put bleach and household cleaners in the dumpster?
No. Bleach, ammonia, drain cleaner, pool chemicals, pesticides, solvents and other household or shop chemicals are prohibited.
Can prohibited items be hidden inside bags or boxes?
No. Intentionally concealing prohibited items results in a $250 concealed restricted item fee in addition to the item and cleanup charges.
What should I do when I am unsure about an item?
Contact Dump It KC before placing the item in the dumpster. It is easier and less expensive to identify an alternative disposal option before the dumpster is collected.
Ask Before You Load It
Restricted materials can damage equipment, contaminate property, injure workers and cause an entire load to be rejected.
